We arrived in Mgarr, Gozo and, having spent a night in the maina to enable us to check in, we swiftly wnet to find a place to anchor. We went to a beautiful circular bay, reminisent of Lulworth Cove, and spent a very peaceful time there. We went ashore in the late afternoon to discover an small tourist destination set up around a huge cave that created a tunnel to the open sea, other pools and wave spouts all on rocks that held fossil formations. This was all very beautiful and we got some lovely sunset pictures as we explored other caves on the way back to the boat.
The next day we moved on to the Blue Lagoon. a definite must see on a Malta visit. This is a stretch of water that is crystal clear over white sand. We went for a swim on a stunning sunny afternoon.
Then off to Valletta. We cheekily picked up a free bouy in the most northerly bay and enjoyed free parking, which came at the cost of a very rolly and swelly stay. Valletta is extraordinary. There are more fortifications here than any where else we have been. The old town is picturesque, with narrow streets, steps, and balconies, which reminded me of Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet. We spent the first trip exploring the war museum at St Elmo and the military history of the place.
The second trip we planned to explore the churches. Unfortunately I timed this trip incorectly, as most of the churches shut at midday, so we missed a number of them that I had wanted to see. However, we paid our 15 euros each to go into the cathedral of St John. This is the main church built by the Knights of St John. It's probably sacrilage to say this but we didn't like it. It was way too much. There was so much decoration and gold stuff that you could not appreciate any of it. Despite this I was glad to have seen it.
We then moved to a bay on the south of Malta to prepare for our trip to Greece. This bay reminded me of Milford Haven, one side very pretty and the other very industrial. More boat cleaning was required as a few showers had brought with them a huge amount of sand covering every part of the boat. It took us a while to decide to stop in Malta as we really want to get to Greece but I'm very glad we did.
