The Channel Islands

Guernsey

We arrived in St Peter Port just an hour before we had clearance over the sill to enter the marina. We stayed for two nights and achieved all our goals for the visit. We spent an afternoon sight-seeing, went running and I even managed to go shoe shopping.

We moved down the coast of Guernsey to an anchorage, which turned out to be very pretty but very swelly.

Sark

Pretty but swelly was the theme of the next few days, as we moved over to have a look at Sark. This island is noted for having; no cars, being independently run in accordance with its feudal system until 2008, having a castle built by the Barclay brothers and being a location included in the most recent Cormoran Strike novel. It was also beautiful.

Herm

The anchorage at Herm was initially less swelly, but this did not last for the two nights we were there. We walked around the entire island on the coastal path, taking in white sand beaches and rocky bays, finishing up in the pub.

Alderney

We moved up to Alderney to shelter from some strong southerly winds. We found that the harbour at Bray was better than any of the places on Sark or Guernsey, but still not particularly still. I guess the swell is inevitable with the large tidal streams around these parts.

Our next stop will be France and a marina where we can enjoy a swell-free sleep.
